California Consumer Privacy Act

If you are a California resident, the information below also applies to you. Certain terms used in this section have the meanings given to them in the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (“CCPA”).

  • Contact information, such as name, postal address, email address, and phone number (collectively referred to as “Personally Identifiable Information” or “PII”);
  • Payment and tax information, such as your credit card number, expiration date, delivery address and billing address, banking account, and tax-related information (collectively referred to as “Financial Information”);
  • Demographic information, including characteristics of protected classifications, such as your age, gender or ethnicity;
  • Commercial and transaction information, such as products and services purchased;
  • Information that you provide when you enter a contest or promotion sponsored by ASL or its affiliates;
  • Your responses to surveys that ASL may ask you to complete for training or research purposes;
  • Audio, electronic, visual, or similar information, such as recordings of customer service calls;
  • Any other personal information that you voluntarily provide, including information you provide when you create an account, purchase ASL’s products or services or contact ASL;
  • Information provided to ASL by social networks when you log in to the Sites using your social network credentials;
  • Inferences drawn from any of the above, such as your preferences or interests;
  • Information collected through automated means, such as usage, browsing activity, search history, device data, and geolocations data

Categories of Personal Information Collected

Categories of Sources from which Personal Information has been collected.

  • ASL and its imprints’ websites, lead generation websites, landing pages, applications, online services, and other features or downloads owned, operated or provided by ASL;
  • Live events sponsored or attended by ASL;
  • Telephone calls with ASL’s employees and/or representatives; and
  • Third party analytics service providers;
  • Perform services, including maintaining or servicing accounts, providing customer service, processing or fulfilling orders and transactions, verifying customer information, processing payments, making royalty payments, if applicable, providing advertising or marketing services, providing analytics services, or providing similar services;
  • Send communications and contact you about ASL’s assisted self-publishing services and related products and services, including promotional materials and other information about the assisted self-publishing services of ASL’s various imprints;
  • Administer your participation in special events, contests, sweepstakes, surveys and other promotions;
  • Perform audits regarding a current interaction with you and concurrent transactions, including, but not limited to, counting ad impressions to unique visitors, verifying positioning and quality of ad impressions, and auditing compliance;
  • Short-term, transient use, including, but not limited to, the contextual customization of ads shown as part of the same interaction;
  • Detect security incidents, protecting against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent, or illegal activity, and prosecuting those responsible for that activity;
  • Debug to identify and repair errors that impair existing intended functionality;
  • Operate, optimize and improve ASL’s products, services and operations, including, but not limited to, developing new services’ managing communications, performing data analytics, and performing training, accounting, auditing and other internal functions;
  • Comply with applicable legal requirements, relevant industry standards and ASL’s internal policies and procedures;
  • Detect, investigate, and prevent activities that may violate ASL’s policies; and
  • Use the information in other ways that ASL describes when you provide the information, or for any other purpose with your express consent.

Categories of Business or Commercial Purposes for which Personal Information has been used 

Categories of Personal Information ASL has sold in the preceding 12 months

  • In the twelve (12) months prior to the effective date of this disclosure, ASL has not sold any Personal Information of consumers, as those terms are defined under the CCPA.

Categories of Personal Information ASL has disclosed for a business purpose in the preceding 12 months

  • Contact information, such as name, mailing address, email address, phone number;
  • Demographic information, including characteristics of protected classifications, such as gender, age and ethnicity;
  • Commercial and transactional information, such as products or services purchased; and
  • Internet or other electronic network activity, such as browser or search history.

Non-Discrimination

ASL will not discriminate against you because you exercise your rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act. For example, ASL will not deny you products or services, charge you a different price or rate for products or services or provide a different quality of products or services if you make an access, deletion, or do not sell request.

You have the right to make the following requests no more than twice in a 12-month period:

Your Rights under the CCPA –

  • Categories of Personal Information that ASL collected about you during the preceding 12 months;
  • Categories of sources from which Personal Information is collected;
  • Business or commercial purpose for collecting or selling Personal Information;
  • Specific pieces of Personal Information that ASL collected about you;
  • Categories of Personal Information that that ASL has sold about you;
  • Categories of third parties to whom the Personal Information was sold;
  • Categories of Personal Information disclosed about you for a business purpose; and
  • Categories of third parties to whom Personal Information was disclosed for a business purpose

Request that ASL disclose the following information:

Deletion Request

  • Request that ASL delete Personal Information that it collected from you, with the exception of Personal Information that ASL must maintain for reasons permitted under the CCPA.
  • Request that ASL opt you out of the sale of your Personal Information.

California Shine the Light

If you are a California resident and have an established business relationship with us, you can request a notice disclosing the categories of personal information we have shared with third parties, for the third parties’ direct marketing purposes, during the preceding twelve (12) months. To request a notice, please submit your request to: Author Solutions, LLC, Attn: Legal Department, Bloomington, Indiana 47403. Please allow sixty (60) days for a response.

If you are a California resident under 18 years old and a registered user, you can request that we remove content or information that you have posted to ASL’s website or other online services. Note that fulfilment of the request may not ensure complete or comprehensive removal (e.g., if the content or information has been reposted by another user).
